Covenant Light Private School

Covenant Light Private School is a non-traditional private school/umbrella school for homeschool families living in Lake County, (and surrounding areas) in Florida.  CLS has been providing services to homeschooling families since 1992 such as umbrella covering, co-op classes, and support group.

Covenant Light Private School (CLS) provides homeschool families with the freedom to educate their children at home while fulfilling Florida’s legal educational requirements through private school enrollment. As a private school umbrella, CLS offers recordkeeping, accountability, guidance, and support while allowing parents to remain the primary educators of their children.

At CLS, families have the freedom to choose the curriculum, teaching methods, and learning style that best meet their student’s needs. Our mission is to equip and encourage parents toward excellence in home education by providing resources, support, programs, and tools that prepare students for college and real life.

Weekly Homeschool Co-op Classes

In addition to umbrella support, CLS offers weekly co-op classes meeting on Thursdays at First Baptist Church of Mount Dora from August - May. These Preschool - 12th grade classes provide students with enriching academic electives, group learning opportunities, friendships, and a vibrant Christian community. Co-op offerings may include enrichment classes, core academic support, fine arts, STEM, and programs for multiple age levels.

Families may participate in home education while also enjoying the benefits of a supportive weekly learning community.

(Families do not have to be enrolled in the umbrella school to participate in the homeschool co-op.)

What Is a Homeschool Co-op?

A homeschool co-op (short for cooperative) is a group of homeschooling families who meet regularly to share in educational opportunities that can be difficult to provide at home alone. Parents work together to offer classes, enrichment activities, and group learning experiences for students.

At CLS, our weekly co-op classes at First Baptist Church of Mount Dora provide students with opportunities such as:

  • Classroom learning with peers
  • Hands-on science, art, and enrichment classes
  • Group discussions and academic support
  • Public speaking and presentation opportunities
  • Fine arts, electives, and special interest classes
  • Friendships and social interaction
  • Christian fellowship and community
  • Parent support and encouragement

A homeschool co-op complements home education by adding the benefits of community learning while parents remain the primary educators at home. Families can enjoy both the flexibility of homeschooling and the support of a weekly academic community.

Think of it as homeschooling with a community.

Flexible Curriculum Options

Parents may choose the curriculum that best fits their family’s educational goals. CLS is affiliated with:

  • Florida Virtual School
  • Lake-Sumter State College
  • Lake Technical College
  • University of South Florida

These partnerships offer opportunities for online learning and dual enrollment.

Attendance Requirements

Families educate students for a minimum of 180 days per school year, which may be completed on a traditional or year-round schedule.

Florida instructional hour guidelines:

  • Kindergarten: 540 instructional hours (3 hours/day)
  • Grades 1–3: 720 instructional hours (4 hours/day)
  • Grades 4–12: 900 instructional hours (5 hours/day)

Educational field trips may count as school days.

Special Needs Support

Students with an IEP or special learning needs are not expected to perform strictly at grade level. CLS looks for one year of measurable progress each year based on testing and individual growth.

Educate at Home with Freedom. Graduate with Confidence.
